Discussion Questions Chapter 7 and Afterword

Forgotten God – Chapter 7 and Afterward
Posted on December 26, 2009 by msmucker

1. Is your life explainable without the Holy Spirit?

2. When something goes well for you, who usually gets the credit?

Romans 15:17-19 (Worldwide English (New Testament))
17So, because of Christ Jesus, I am proud of my work for God. 18I will speak only of what Christ has done through me. People who are not Jews have obeyed the good news. They have obeyed because of what I told them and because of what I did.
19I had the power to do signs and wonderful things through the power of the Holy Spirit. So I have told the good news of Christ all the way from the city of Jerusalem to the country of Illyricum.

3. If you read your own biography or heard a speech at your funeral, how much of it would be about what you’ve accomplished as opposed to what God’s accomplished in and through you?

4. Does this describe your church?

    Romans 14:17 (Contemporary English Version)
God’s kingdom… is about pleasing God, about living in peace, and about true happiness. All this comes from the Holy Spirit.

How is God’s Spirit currently leading your congregation?

5. Who are you encouraging to walk in step with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:25)? In what ways are you involved in helping others discern and follow after God’s direction for their lives?

Discussion Questions Chapter 6

Forgotten God – Chapter 6

Posted originally on December 25, 2009 by msmucker

These are our questions for discussion on Chapter 6 on Sunday April 11th. (We can also hit anything in previous chapters for those who could not be there in previous weeks.) Next week April 18th will be our last chat for this book. It will be on Chapter 7 and the Afterward.

For Chapter 6

1. Chan talks about asking questions like “What does God want me to do today?” instead of “What is God’s will for my life in the future?” Are you living in the Spirit now, even as you read this? What does He want you to do?

2. “Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time act.” Do you agree? Why or why not?

3. Is the fruit of the spirit apparent in your life? (see Galatians 5:22-23)

    Galatians 5:16 (Contemporary English Version)
If you are guided by the Spirit, you won’t obey your selfish desires.

    Philippians 2:12-13 (New Living Translation)
Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

4. How are you working out your salvation? Gauge yourself: In which areas of your life are you allowing God to work in you, and in which areas are you maintaining control?

New to this book? Here is a review in Relevant Magazine:
http://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/books/reviews/18446-forgotten-god-reversing-our-tragic-neglect-of-the-holy-spirit

Questions Chapters 3-5
1. In what ways do you grieve the Spirit? (see Ephesians 4:30 and context)

2. Why do you want the Spirit? Is your pursuit of miracles greater than your pursuit of God? (see James 4:3, 5 and 1 Corinthians 14:12)

3. On a scale of 0-10, how much do you trust God in your daily life? If not God, who or what are you trusting?

4. In chapter 5, Chan indicates two obstacles to experiencing intimacy with God: comfort and volume. Which of these is most detrimental in your life? How have you (or can you in the future) overcome them?

Future Chapter Plans: CH. 3-5 this Sunday (3/28), then CH. 6 on the Sunday AFTER Easter (4/11), and finally CH. 7 and the Afterword (4/18).

Discussion Questions Intro, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2

Our first book chat on Forgotten God will be Sunday night March 14 from 8:30-9:30 (just had our spring time change). Check out this review of Forgotten God if you haven’t already:
http://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/books/reviews/18446-forgotten-god-reversing-our-tragic-neglect-of-the-holy-spirit

Discussion Questions
We may only discuss the intro and Chapter 1 tonight but I will list the questions through Chapter 2.
These questions are from http://smuckerfamily.wordpress.com/.

Forgotten God – Intro and Chapters 1-2

1 Corinthians 4:20 (New Living Translation)
For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.

    Romans 8:9 (Contemporary English Version)
You are no longer ruled by your desires, but by God’s Spirit, who lives in you. People who don’t have the Spirit of Christ in them don’t belong to him.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (New International Version)
Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.

1. When was the last time you undeniably saw God’s Spirit at work in or around you?

2. How, if at all, is the power and presence of the Holy Spirit evident in your church? In your life?

3. Are you a caterpillar or a butterfly? The difference should be overwhelmingly clear. Can you describe the difference God’s Spirit has made in your life? What sets you apart from your non-Christian neighbors?

4. Are you willing to accept that your understanding about the Holy Spirit might be wrong? If the Bible says something different from what you’ve been taught, would you change your ways accordingly?

5. Do you care about what people think when they see you, or do you actually want to serve and please God in everything? Are you afraid of getting “too much” of the Holy Spirit and what that might mean for your life? Are you honestly open to being led by Him?

6. What fears do you have about completely following the Spirit, whatever that may mean and wherever that may take you?

Luke 11:13 (New American Standard Bible)
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
